Performance?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>One of the emerging website metrics that publishers are beginning to pay close attention to is <em>Time to Interactive<\/em> (TTI). It&#8217;s a website speed measurement that has gained fast popularity through its inclusion atop Google&#8217;s latest Pagespeed Insights reports. The metric itself looks at the time it takes for web content to become interactive and viewable for visitors.<\/p>\n<p>TTI has become a staple of pagespeed optimization and is often touted by Google and others as one of the most important metrics for websites to observe when working on site speed and performance.<\/p>\n<p>With the entire web obsessing about speed, we thought it might be a good idea to take a look at how TTI correlates with other important metrics for publishers.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The study below includes correlations between TTI and other metrics for over 1,000 different kinds of web publishers.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7889 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ezoic.com\/fr-lang\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/download-2019-05-14T165937.884-min.png\" alt=\"time to interactive (tti) metrics\" width=\"747\" height=\"417\"><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_is_Time_To_Interactive_TTI\"><\/span><strong>What is Time To Interactive (TTI)?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Time to interactive is a metric that calculates the length of time it takes for a website to become viewable and interactive to the visitor. TTI provides a more granular understanding of the time it takes until a website visitor is able to access the information they likely want and need from a page.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>TTI is often looked at as a better metric for visitor experiences than metrics like page load time, time to first byte (TTFB), or time to response end. This is why it has been adopted by many of the large platforms and web advocates as a core speed metric to optimize around.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>TTI is often considered the &#8220;2nd site speed metric&#8221;. First Contentful Paint (FCP) is referred to as the 1st, as it describes the first time any major element of the page or content loads visibility to the visitor. TTI is largely reflective of when that content becomes readable and actionable to the visitor.<\/p>\n<p>TTI is seen as superior to FCP for understanding visitor experiences because it is more reflective of when a visitor can extract what is needed from the page. Often, FCP doesn&#8217;t represent a moment at which a visitor can begin reading or interacting with the content so the experience isn&#8217;t as optimal until the content becomes interactive.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_does_TTI_correlate_with_revenue_and_visitor_experiences\"><\/span><strong>How does TTI correlate with revenue and visitor experiences?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>We looked at approximately 1,500 sites for the month of March in 2019 to review how TTI might be correlated with things like bounce rates, pageviews per visit, session duration, and website ad earnings.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7926 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ezoic.com\/fr-lang\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/download-2019-05-14T173641.666.png\" alt=\"what is a good website time to interactive or TTI?\" width=\"844\" height=\"526\"><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>We found that the avg. TTI does have a correlation to some of the objective visitor experience metrics, like bounce rate, but did not find a significant correlation between TTI and website ad earnings overall.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, we looked at how TTI compared to other site speed metrics to see if it was predictive of overall speed to the visitor vs. common metrics like average page load time.<\/p>\n<p>We did not find a significant correlation to suggest that avg. page load time has the same effect on visitor experiences or website revenue to the same degree that we saw TTI have on these important metrics for publishers.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em>We adjusted for outliers in each of the charts below and feel that we have strong statistical confidence among the types of website represented to provide an objective perspective on these topics.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_does_TTI_affect_page_RPM\"><\/span><strong>How does TTI affect page RPM?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>We looked at Page RPM instead of EPMV because of the potential impact that TTI could have on the users time on page or their propensity to bounce. Since we&#8217;ve seen both of these metrics influence overall page revenue, we were interested to see if initial page revenue was affected by TTI.<\/p>\n<p><em>It is important to note that <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.ezoic.com\/why-ecpm-vs-rpm-is-skewing-true-earnings\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Page RPM is not a good metric for measuring revenue or ad earning performance<\/a>. As stated above, we are simply looking at how it could potentially be impacted by page load \u2014 therefor potentially impacting overall session earnings (EPMV), which <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.ezoic.com\/higher-website-rpms-mean-lower-ad-revenue\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a much better indicator of website earnings performance<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>TTI does not have a very strong correlation with page RPM.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8059 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ezoic.com\/fr-lang\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/download-2019-05-15T152034.303-min.png\" alt=\"tti and ad earnings - adsense\" width=\"877\" height=\"568\"><\/p>\n<p>After accounting for outliers, it does not appear that TTI is a great predictor of Page RPM. While Page RPM does appear to spike just slightly for sites with TTI below 2.5s.<\/p>\n<p>Most sites with a TTI below 10s experience approximately the same opportunity for an above-average page RPM.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Does_TTI_correlate_with_website_bounce_rates\"><\/span><strong>Does TTI correlate with website bounce rates?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>ouais. We found that there was a slight correlation between TTI and website bounce rates, although it was not as high for these publishers as it is often touted across all website (including non-publishers) according to Google&#8217;s own research.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In our dataset, we measure bounce rate differently than the default setting in Google Analytics.  <strong>We measured a <em>bounce<\/em> as a single pageview that lasted LESS THAN 30 SECONDS.<\/strong>  This is a more accurate and granular way of understanding visitor intent; especially for informational publishers or publishers that rely on Google Search for the majority of their traffic.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-7939 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ezoic.com\/fr-lang\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/download-2019-05-14T175048.226-min-1-1024x515.png\" alt=\"bounce rate and time to interactive tti\" width=\"1024\" height=\"515\"><\/p>\n<p>There is a gradual trend we see in bounce rate increases and how they correlate with longer TTI measurements. What is a bit surprising is that there was only about a 45% increase in average bounce rates between the sites with the lowest avg. time to interactive and the sites with the highest avg. time to interactive measurements.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Does_time_to_interactive_impact_time_on_page\"><\/span><strong>Does <em>time to interactive<\/em> impact time on page?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>We already know that TTI does have an impact on bounce rates (single pageviews less than 30 seconds). This means there will be a somewhat obvious correlation between TTI and the amount of time a visitor spends on their initial pageview.<\/p>\n<p>The correlation is actually very slight. You can see the average pageview duration declining just slightly in the trendline as the avg. site TTI climbs.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>It is very important to note that most of the outliers that exceed the average pageview duration times have a TTI of at least 10 seconds. In fact, all sites with an average pageview duration over 8 minutes saw a TTI less than 8 seconds. Average pageview duration didn&#8217;t really start to trend downward for the majority of publishers until TTI reached beyond 7.9 seconds.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8044 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ezoic.com\/fr-lang\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/download-2019-05-15T144420.026-min.png\" alt=\"pageview duration and time on site time to interactive\" width=\"818\" height=\"514\"><\/p>\n<p>Il semble que la plupart des \u00e9diteurs ont des sites avec une ITT qui est assez faible pour les emp\u00eacher de conna\u00eetre une baisse importante de la dur\u00e9e de pageview.<\/p>\n<p>S&#8217;il ya un conseil pour les \u00e9diteurs qui cherchent \u00e0 maximiser le temps sur la page<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.ezoic.com\/engagement-time-important-top-publishers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">(qui est corr\u00e9l\u00e9 avec de meilleurs taux d&#8217;annonces dans de nombreux cas<\/a>), nous recommandons d&#8217;obtenir ITT en dessous de 10s si possible.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"LITT_moyen_et_sa_correlation_avec_le_temps_total_de_chargement_des_pages\"><\/span><strong>L&#8217;ITT moyen et sa corr\u00e9lation avec le temps total de chargement des pages<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Comme on pouvait s&#8217;y attendre, la plus grande corr\u00e9lation que nous avons trouv\u00e9e en examinant l&#8217;impact de l&#8217;ITT sur les revenus des sites Web, les exp\u00e9riences des utilisateurs et les mesures de vitesse \u00e9tait la corr\u00e9lation entre l&#8217;ITT et le temps total de chargement des pages. L&#8217;ITT est ce qui sera le plus susceptible d&#8217;avoir un impact sur la capacit\u00e9 physique d&#8217;un visiteur d&#8217;acc\u00e9der au contenu et de s&#8217;y engager. Bien que l&#8217;acte de comparaison peut \u00eatre un moyen utile de comparer les aspects de votre propri\u00e9t\u00e9 web, il est important de se rappeler que tous les sites sont diff\u00e9rents.
